From Grease to Growth: My Journey in the Automotive Industry
By Greg Plunkett, Owner of Christian Brothers Automotive – Falcon, CO
Hi! I’m excited to share a little about my journey—from wanting to be a fighter pilot to owning my own automotive repair shop. My story shows that you don’t have to know exactly what you want to do right away. What matters most is staying curious, working hard, and being open to learning new things.
My first job was as a lifeguard in high school, but I always had an interest in how things work—especially cars. I started taking automotive classes and hanging around repair shops, and I realized I really enjoyed solving problems and helping people get back on the road safely.
I began as a tire technician, then earned certifications and took on more responsibility. I moved up to service advisor, then service manager, and eventually earned the opportunity to own my own shop through a special program. After nine years of dedication, my wife Chelsey and I were able to buy our Christian Brothers Automotive location in Falcon, Colorado.
One of the hardest parts of my journey was learning to grow with each new position. Each step brought new challenges, but I’ve learned that having the right people around you—and being willing to learn and adapt—makes a huge difference. Chelsey has been a key part of that journey. Her honesty and support continue to inspire me.
At our shop, we live by the motto: Love your neighbor as yourself. That means treating customers and employees with the care and respect we’d want for our own families. Our team includes technicians, advisors, and managers—and we all work together to make sure guests leave feeling confident in their vehicles.
A typical day for me includes everything from managing shop operations and handling payroll to turning wrenches and brainstorming with Chelsey on how to reach more people. I enjoy the variety and the opportunity to keep learning every day.
What makes someone successful in this field? A mix of mechanical knowledge and people skills. You can teach someone how to fix a car—but learning how to listen, communicate, and take care of people is just as important.
If you’re interested in this industry, my advice is to reach out to a local shop owner and start a conversation. You don’t need experience to start—we hire people with the right attitude and a desire to learn. We even pay for ongoing training and certifications.
And when I’m not at work? You’ll find me working on our drag racing Camaro—or dreaming about earning my pilot’s license someday!
